People who enjoy snowmobiling and
skiing should also wear a nighttime safety vest when engaging in these
winter sports during morning and evening hours. This helps fellow
athletes avoid collisions.
Conditions During Which Nighttime Safety Vests Should Be Worn
Nighttime safety vests should, obviously, be worn during the nighttime.
In addition, nighttime safety vests should be worn during dusk and dawn
hours. In fact, research has demonstrated that the 30-45 minutes at the
end of the day and at the beginning of the day are the most dangerous
times of the day for people on the sides of the roads.
The reason dusk and dawn are such dangerous times is because the human
eye has difficulty adjusting to the changes in lighting. Nonetheless,
most drivers don’t turn headlights on during these time periods.
Therefore, people are less likely to notice someone on the side of the
road until they are very near to them.
There are other times when a nighttime safety vest should be worn
besides during nighttime hours. For example, a nighttime safety vest
should be worn on foggy days to improve visibility. For a police officer
investigating an accident on the side of the road, wearing a nighttime
safety vest on a foggy day could be the matter of life or death as the
vision of drivers is severely impaired on foggy days.
Overcast or days that are rainy and snowy can also impair vision.
Therefore, a person who is working or exercising along roadsides should
wear a nighttime safety vest during these weather conditions. In
addition, individuals in areas that are shadowed by dense trees or by
buildings should also wear a nighttime safety vest in order to improve
their visibility to drivers.
In fact, nighttime safety vests are helpful in improving a person’s
visibility at any time. For this reason, wearing nighttime safety vests
during the day for people who work in high traffic areas, or for people
who engage in roadside recreational activities, is a good idea.
Caring for individual safety is not a matter to be taken lightly. It
only takes a second for a life to be lost when hit by a car. Anything
that can be done to help prevent such a tragedy should be utilized.
