After each setting was filmed at different times of the day and evening, the researchers viewed the film recordings. The film was slowed down while being watched and it was advanced until one of the researchers was able to see the safety vest on the film. Once the vest was identified, the film was stopped. If the group did not confirm the sighting of the safety vest, the film was allowed to advance further until it was sighted again. At this point, the confirmation process started again. Once the point of sighting was confirmed by group consensus, that point was recorded and comments were added. To help prevent the possibility of a bias opinion, this same procedure was conducted twice for each setting and agreed upon by all members of the research team. In addition to being able to spot safety vests quickly, the researchers will also interested in being able to distinguish the police officer from the background and being able to identify the person as a police officer. The research team found that safety vests of a lemon/yellow color were consistently the vests that were seen first, as opposed to red/orange safety visits. In being able to distinguish the police officer from the background, the red/orange vest was slightly better under direct sunlight and when under the shade of trees. When the tests were completed under low light levels, however, the lemon/yellow vest was slightly better. Once the lighting was dark, such as that which common during dusk, the lemon/yellow safety vests performed better at helping to distinguish the police officer from the background. These results are consistent with the way the eye works, as the ability for the eye to determine colors worsens as the light gets darker. Colors with low amounts of energy are more difficult to detect as light is reduced, and red has less energy than yellow.
